Through past, contemporary and avantgarde
There is one word that could perfectly describe my musical journey: multifaceted. Just like a polyhedron, some of its faces are more evident, while others remain hidden, but are equally present.
I will begin with the most visible face: contemporary music.
I first discovered it during my last years of study at the Conservatory, in Chamber music and Composition classes. Dal niente – Interieur III by Helmut Lachenmann was the piece that sparked my passion for contemporary music. The moment I listened to it, I decided to take on the challenge. Contemporary music is in many ways a challenge: it challenges the clarinettist to tackle what is seemingly arduous, it is the challenge of timbre and dynamics, it is a challenge of energy.
After almost three decades since that defining moment, I still embrace this challenge in my ensembles: FontanaMIXensemble and Syntax Ensemble, and in many others. I share what I have learned in my journey with composers and musicians from all paths.
The base of my polyhedron is classical music, in which I am deeply rooted, and that is ever present in my journey as a musician. It is an unlimited source of enrichment when I collaborate with orchestras and chamber music ensembles.
To decipher the present and evolve, looking at the past is of utmost importance.
The present however goes beyond contemporary music.
The present is also made by pop, jazz, improvisation, musical theater, popular music.
I have broadened and continue to broaden my glance towards it with these genres, by taking part in several discographic and live productions.
A multifaceted path where I honed the fundamental instruments of the contemporary clarinettist — and musician — toolbox.
